Phytoliths occur abundantly on the earth surface from plants to soils and geological sediments. Asan importan tool in the geosciences and archaeology, phytolith made great constribution to the palaeontology and paleoenvironmental reconstructions, and the history of plant-human interactions, and carbon sequestration related to the global carbon cycling. Phytolith is widely used in various research and rapidly developing in the past deecades. International Meeting on Phytolish Research is an important platform for the academic exchange and collaboration throghout the global world. Following the 10th meeting in France, 2016, we are going to hold the 11th International Meeting on Phytolith Research in Wuhan, central China.

  Since the end of twentieth century, the application of new technology has made great progress on the basic theoretical research and more extensive application of phytolith with the geosciences and archaeology, ranging from the generation and deposition of silicon body, to the morphology and classification, plant domestication and origin of agriculture, climate change and biological evolution, etc.

  Since the introduction of phytolith analysis in 1980's, Chinese experts and scholars have made significant progress on the morphology and classification, paleoclimate and paleoecology, agricultural origin and environmental archaeology, and biogeochemistry research. Many more important achievements of the past 30 years laid the foundation for the rapid development of phytolith reseach and an increasingly wide utilization in important discovery on the key scientific problem in different fields, which also made significant contributions to the global phytolith research simultaneously.

  Nevertheless, phytolith research platform needs to be deepen. Exchanges and cooperation also need to be further strengthened in the phytolith identification criteria and taxonomy, phytoliths in the surface soil and environmental significance, fossil phytoliths and palaeo-envionmental reconstruction, phytolith and environmental archaeology, phytolith-occluded carbon and global carbon cycling, modern plant phytolith and global change, etc.

  A systematic review of the past achievements and the latest research progress in communication are conducive to the the rapid development and promotion of the subject.

  I believe this meeting will accelerate the development of phytolith research and multilateral cooperation in the earth sciences and archaeology throughout the world.
